It was the message of submission (which is what ‘Islam’ means) to the will of God: obedience to divine law, prayer, reverence, good works and faithfulness.

begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors.

rather than lose the precious privilege of communion with God before setting out. Sir Matthew Hale says:

O mankind! Your insolence is against your own souls,—an enjoyment of the life of the present: in the end, to Us is your return, and We shall show you the truth of all that you did.

We grant them respite that they may grow in their iniquity: but they will have a shameful punishment.

Men are protectors of women, because God has made some of them excel others and because they spend their wealth on them. So virtuous women are obedient and guard in the husband’s absence what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you apprehend infidelity, admonish them, then refuse to share their beds, and finally hit them [lightly].a T
