Yet despite the enormous power that accompanied his defeat of the Quraysh, Muhammad refused to replace the Meccan aristocracy with a Muslim monarchy; he would be the Keeper of the Keys, but he would not be the King of Mecca.

Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day ask you for no exemption from fighting with their goods and persons. And Allah knows well those who do their duty.

Allah loveth not mischief.

“O you men! Now Truth has reached you from your Lord! Those who receive guidance, do so for the good of their own souls; those who stray, do so to their own loss: and I am not (set) over you to arrange your affairs.” 109 Follow you the inspiration sent unto you, and be patient and constant, till Allah does decide: for He is the best to decide.

We grant them respite that they may grow in their iniquity: but they will have a shameful punishment.
