The observer self is made up of the tools which James discovered in the course of his work on himself—objectivity and detachment (the microscope of the scientist) along with love and compassion (the first-aid kit of the friend) toward our many other selves.

If we can work toward this kind of authenticity, then the living kindness—the water of compassion—will naturally flow.

Dwelling meditatively in the different and expanded sense of self that the process of inquiry opens will make it less likely that habitual self-views are so easily reestablished once this particular experience ends.
