notetaking tools today can surface known unknowns. If I know that I know this thing, but I don't remember it, I can go find it.
what it doesn't do well is show you unknown unknowns, making connections that you haven't thought of yet.

if you take notes over a long period of time, you will develop a perspective that's impossible to develop from reading any one thing. we have biases that prune away thoughts that don’t fit the narrative in your head in the moment - having a repository of older thoughts that you can revisit is life-giving.
A great thing about taking notes is that it subtly encourages you to live a ‘notes-worthy life’
You end up seeking interesting conversations to build your memex; experimenting with new recipes to add to your collection; reading more widely to find surprising connections etc.
Recently I thought about the heyday of bookmarking apps – Pocket, del.icio.us, Pinboard, Pinterest, etc.
It seems that many are still around. Or maybe these are the ones who managed to survive?
