Under Schmidt’s new orders, YouTube began slapping more commercials on the site and hiring more “monetization” engineers. Walk once greeted one tartly, “What are you doing to ruin my user experience today?”
There’s no evidence anyone warned her about a different strain these goals placed on YouTube, how prioritizing engagement and spreading commercial funds as widely as possible paved the way for the trainwrecks to come.
