The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Commentary on the Raja Yoga Sutras by Sri Swami Satchidananda
In the language of the Gita, not only elation and depression, not only pleasure and pain, but everything in life is a duality; and in order to attain samadhi, one of the magnificent disciplines taught by Sri Krishna is evenness of mind.
Yoga claims to provide a system by which the practitioner can directly realize his or her puruṣa, the soul or innermost conscious self, through mental practices.
Ignorance here, avidyā, means much more fundamentally to confuse puruṣa with prakṛti and remains permanent until enlightenment is attained (even though the other kleśas, as noted above, can be intermittent, etc.).
Meditation, control of the senses And passions, and selfless service of all Are the body, the scriptures are the limbs, And truth is the heart of this wisdom. 9
