The Trusted Advisor Fieldbook: A Comprehensive Toolkit for Leading with Trust
Trust, as I discussed in the Louverture chapter, is the foundation of communication. Simply saying something you feel more or less comfortable terming “the truth” doesn’t build trust. What builds trust is the bona fide truth being heard.
Before you try to move people to your position, make sure they feel that you understand where they are coming from, what they are feeling, and what they are dealing with.
When a team has this kind of trust to enter into capacity discussions, they find the gaping holes in their teams and put an end to long-standing patterns. They either add the capacity by bringing more talent to the team, or they develop one of the members. Capacity must exist, but it takes trust to get there, and then you can trust it to deliver.
