Rules of Civility: A Novel

Maybe it was because we found being in each other’s company so effortless. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that he had clearly been in love with Bitsy Houghton since he was a kid (star-crossed romance being the spoiler that it is). Either way, we knew that our feelings for each other weren’t urgent, or impassioned, or prone to deception.

It was a season of personal discovery.

Which is just to say, be careful when choosing what you’re proud of—because the world has every intention of using it against you.
