How can you avoid the inconveniences associated with this experimentation? You can’t. You must instead adjust your mindset so that you no longer fear these annoyances.

allowing yourself space to breathe • allowing yourself to not be defined by a box that having one job – with a title chosen by someone else – can put you in • having the courage and tools to make big moves on the side, without risking financial stability • giving yourself the confidence to not be defined by one thing

If you experiment, you have to fail. By definition, experimenting means going to territory where you’ve never been, where failure is very possible. How can you know you’re going to succeed? Having the courage to face the unknown is so important.

So I’m taking my belated gap year, I’m “dropping out” of the tech career ladder. At some point you run out of excuses (save more money, figure out immigration stuff, also these layoffs, also the uncertainty, and what if you just spiral, or what if you fail, blah blah blah). By the end it felt less like a decision and more like an inevitab
