This baby’s life would rely on my maternity leave, my savings, my body, my career. I would have to make all the sacrifice while Andy’s life could continue mostly as normal. He disingenuously offered to give up comedy and be a stay-at-home dad. We both knew that would never happen.
What many don’t see is the severe impact this is all having on women – the damage of pregnancy and maternity discrimination on our mental health, the pressure to be perfect, the physical exhaustion of attempting to do it all, the struggle with the lack of power and control because the system doesn’t work for us. It’s all too much.
Western culture leaves the entire responsibility of child rearing to mothers then blames us for everything that goes wrong. In no way are we allowed to do the work of raising our children according to our own principles or ethics. We have “experts” to tell us exactly what needs to be done, in exactly what way, in order to be morally “correct.
