New stories of power that matter
The things we touch and smell and see and experience through our senses are how stories become powerful. But I have never wanted to only tell powerfully evocative stories. I have wanted to tell evocative stories that become a problem for power. For that, I draw upon data and research.
We invent the stories we use to guide our lives, and these stories will continue to evolve. Due to many factors, many of our current cultural scripts and stories have calcified over several generations and have stopped working as reliably as they have in the past.
Thinking is a creative act that can disclose or discover new meanings in old stories, even if the way they are read departs from the interpretations of the scholars who have assumed ownership of the material.
almost all the inviolable, incontrovertible-seeming assumptions of our society can be understood not as inevitable facts of life, but as stories.
