In Ascension

there was no final, clear, encompassing grasp of the acts and the consequences that made up the new, bitter story of my life.

It was an event—a small one but nevertheless a true event—of eternity breaking into time. It didn’t take me out of the world but placed me more deeply into it. It was an encounter of transcendence, and yet it directed me deeper into beauty, delivering a rich connection with the world.

I began my understanding of transcendence as a meta-epistemic locus for the authoritative moral understanding of the world which inherently or ultimately tended to elude domination by worldly powers, even though the history of the world is the history of the attempt to dominate this locus.
