How to Be (Reasonably) Hard on Yourself
Saved by Matt O'Donnell and
I anchor my practice around the philosophy of “1% better every day”. The concept of “1% better” acknowledges that constant progress—no matter how small—can lead to significant improvements over time. It focuses on continuous learning, improvement, and incremental steps toward a goal. It promotes consistency, resilience, and a growth mindset—recognising that perfection is often unattainable but progress is always possible. Conversation between Alex Hormozi and Tom Bilyeu
instagram.comAgain, there is no shame in working hard for a better quality of life in the future. ‘You should live in the moment’ is as unhelpful an imperative as ‘You should believe in yourself and secure the future you want’. The only ‘should’ we need ever take on board is that we ‘should’ get on with our lives without hurting other people.
As you're presumably aware, this is a terrible mindset for actually making lasting changes. What you need, instead, are tiny goals and a commitment to incremental progress (" small wins"), plus a willingness to encounter failure after failure as you stumble toward improvement. To put it another way: fresh- startism is a form of perfection
