Start with the basics: practice, document, and verify. But how do you instruct your senses to look forward? Well, ask yourself, put your attention on the question of what is coming up for you, and notice where your attention is drawn.
For me, getting an accurate picture of reality ultimately comes down to two things: being able to synthesize accurately and knowing how to navigate levels.
When Susan expressed her surprise, the instructor told her that whether she realized it or not, she had been drawing the familiar objects from memory and association rather than from sight. The unfamiliar shapes made her have to see what was really there.
You can learn whether the things you thought you loved to do are really as satisfying as you thought. Conversely, you can see that tasks you normally avoid are not really that bad; in fact, they can be fulfilling and lead to flow if you are consciously aware when you do them.
