Well, what if the other uncomfortable experiences in our lives — feeling bored or stressed or drained or trapped or isolated — could be used to give us similar information? If we don’t like the way we feel, what if we didn’t choose to dismiss or numb or distract ourselves from that feeling?
Curiosity is a crucial component of lessening our reactivity.
So if emotions have biological purposes, then what is the biological purpose of surprise? Surprise jolts us to attention. Surprise is triggered when our schemas fail, and it prepares us to understand why the failure occurred. When our guessing machines fail, surprise grabs our attention so that we can repair them for the future.
