In 1963, boxer Milo Savage fought judoka Gene LeBell in a contest meant to show the superiority of American boxing. Things didn’t go as the organizers hoped. LeBell threw Savage to the ground and choked him unconscious. It was the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight in the United States.
