The Mess of a Creative Space
Sometimes the process of thinking looks like needless chaos from the outside
But thats what creatives should be doing.
Banging on random objects just to see what it might shake out.
Creatives need to make a mess in order to arrive at clarity.
To come up with new ideas, you have to have space to be messy, to procrastinate, and to let your mind wander and free-associate. But there needs to be a balance. You eventually need to channel it into something concrete, or you won’t produce anything.

You may think that if your studio is tidy, it will free you up to be more efficient, and therefore, you will produce more. Maybe that will help you in the execution stage of your work if you’re, say, a printmaker pulling prints, but it won’t help you come up with an interesting design for the next print. If you’re going to do high-level creative work, you have to accept the messiness of your initial creations, knowing that excellence is born from the sisters of patience and iteration.
The second you start condemning young and fragile ideas, you’re toast.
