Last night we took ourselves on a date to the movies.

Walked into ‘We live in time’ while the outside light was still early, fall dusk and softening, and walked out in the darkness. Spent an hour and forty seven minutes jumping through timelines and other people’s chapters. Me leaving feeling like certainly our lives are not lived linearly, this before that, but are maybe more like that drippy, multi-dipped wax hand cast you made at the street fair. Not a multi-course meal, dishes cleared between each course and flavors forgotten, but instead certain moments tasting of the befores and afters all together in a jumble. Layers of a cake that we eat all in one bite.

More like this tiny, plastic, assless-chap-wearing, drink-adorning man that I have left in my coat pocket for years. Finding it again between my fingers as I shove my hands into my coat a day ago, I’m portal-ed back to its origin, the silliest of parties in my friend’s apartment — “Chaps and Apps,” a collective, dating-profile-swiping extravanganza.

My little man’s name has been rubbed off from all the pocket time, and his chaps are worse for the wear. But here are the men in their prime (photo cred: Drinking Buddies)
