I’d love to say I managed to keep the personal turmoil out of my professional life. But few people have the ability to compartmentalise, and I’m definitely not one of them.
but I think the real reason is that small mistakes tend to be revealed to me before they become big mistakes. And I make sure I tune in to them because small mistakes are much easier to recover from or pivot around.
You must also be quite single-minded, and a bit pigheaded. It’s not because you don’t want to listen to anyone else. It’s more because you must have absolute self-belief. And when you’re in that zone, you can’t afford the distraction of the naysayers. You need to conserve your energy for all the barriers you have to push through.
Beauty therapy treatments are more functional—the client is looking for a specific result. But spa treatments, while still results-focused, are all about the experience. They should be a beautiful blend of effectiveness and relaxation, something that ultimately supports the customer’s wellbeing.
Since they were also a new business, I saw it as an opportunity to grow together. But really what I needed was a level of expertise beyond my own which they simply didn’t have.
